SITE WAS ‘HOME FROM HOME’ FOR SUNDERLAND APPRENTICE

A Sunderland apprentice bricklayer has the claim to fame of serving his entire time on just one building site.

Christopher Shortland an apprentice bricklayer with Broseley Homes Limited, has spent the last 3 years gaining his training on their premier Havelock Park site development near the Pennywell area in the city. The extensive development of more than 250 new homes has radically transformed the once run down location. And in the process created work for many local and young people, like Christopher.

Broseley Homes, the North East’s highly successful house builder, has experienced rapid growth in recent years. The Company firmly believes in demonstrating it’s commitment to the development and training of young people in the Sunderland area by investing in their futures.

Christopher, from South Hylton, joined Broseley at a time when there has been an acute need for skilled craftsmen and tradesmen within the construction industry throughout the UK. This has been generated by the almost relentless demand for new homes, not only in the North East but right across Britain.

On completing his NVQ Level 3 Bricklayer apprenticeship with Broseley, Christopher says on his time spent on the site at Havelock Park:

“Broseley has given me a great opportunity by backing me to train as a bricklayer. Not only have I learnt a new skill, but it’s given me a trade that I enjoy doing and I’m proud of.”

“I’ve really enjoyed my time working on the site here at Havelock Park with the team and in many ways I’ll be sorry to be leaving it, now we’ve finished. It’s become my second home more or less,” said Christopher.

He added:

“There’s plenty of opportunity ahead for me in working for Broseley and I’m looking forward to starting work on one of our new sites in the region soon. I’ve learnt a lot, but there’s even more ahead for me, and I’m looking forward to developing my bricklaying skills and knowledge of the construction industry even further.”

Broseley Homes has worked closely with Sunderland City Council in supporting regeneration in the Pennywell area, to create an improved environment for local people to live.

Commenting on their commitment to the area and the added benefit in training young people and creating work opportunity for them and many others locally, Len Worsfold Managing Director of Broseley Homes says:

“Young people like Christopher need encouraging in gaining new skills. I firmly believe in the tremendous benefit this creates not only for us in building a strong workforce, but equally in creating work for local people.”

“We’re enabling people through putting something really meaningful back into their community here by building homes that are affordable and desirable for them. We are making a more vibrant and better place to be, so our creating work for them too is a bonus.”

The highly successful Havelock Park development by Broseley Homes of 251 new houses provides a mix of affordable quality homes for local people. From 1 bedroom starter homes to 4 bedroom detached homes, the site is one of the largest private housing developments that the Sunderland area has seen in many years.
