'TOPPING GOOD NEWS' AT HAVELOCK PARK
One of the largest new home developments in the North East became a step nearer to completion this week, with the ancient ‘Topping Out’ ceremony at the Broseley Homes Havelock Park site in Sunderland.
Officiating at the ‘Topping Out’ was Councillor Paul Watson of Sunderland City Council, along with Broseley Managing Director Len Worsfold and Build Manager Les Yeomans. The near completion of the 253 homes development, comes at a time of mushrooming demand for low cost new homes in the North East region and throughout the UK.
Speaking on the success of the flagship development at Havelock Park, Managing Director of Broseley Homes Len Worsfold said:
“We’re delighted with the success generated by our development here in Sunderland and the opportunity we’ve created for many local people to own their own home. By working closely with the City Council in planning this development, we’ve achieved the aim of offering quality, but truly affordable homes for local people."
He added:
“This ensures that the starter homes that many people aspire to owning are easily attainable, allowing them to get onto the property ladder. Our homes are well within their reach. We can help them to achieve their ambition, so they can become stakeholders in their community. I’m sure that we demonstrate by investing locally and working with the Council, that we’re able to lift the spirit of the area. We’ve created an attractive environment that generates a whole new feel to the locality, that people genuinely now want to live and work within.”
Also speaking at the ceremony, Councillor Watson, Deputy Leader, Sunderland City Council stated:
“The Broseley development at Havelock Park provides the chance for people to own their own home in an area that was in sore need of urban regeneration. The Local Authority believes that by working with local developers in the Sunderland area who show real commitment to supporting regeneration, that we can revitalise these disadvantaged areas. We want to create a better place for our people to live and bring up their families, so we can build a sustainable future for Sunderland.”
The ancient ‘Topping Out’ ceremony is believed to have originated in pre-Medieval times in the Dark Ages. The fixing of a branch, or bough, from an evergreen tree to the top of a newly roofed building of significance to people in the community, was thought to bring good luck and drive out ‘evil spirits’ that may have entered the building. Today, the meaning is purely linked to the importance of the roof going onto an important building. Providing the opportunity for key parties involved in the project to celebrate the occasion.
The Broseley development at Havelock Park is a mix of affordable starter homes and detached homes. Now just remaining is the spacious Lockheed 4 bedroom detached show-home, priced at only £176,995.
